It was November 1st, 2003, and a very cold crisp morning. Halloween was the night before and Brandon, my eight year old son, was a deer hunter for Halloween. We left as soon as he was done trick or treating, and Brandon fell asleep on the three hour drive to our hunting cabin.
The next morning we were in the stand at about 5:45 a.m. I was going to attempt to film the hunt and also coach Brandon on his first deer hunt. Brandon has been tagging along with me since age four and this would be his first time actually getting to hunt. I loaded his Savage .243 and put it on safety. Nothing was moving at first light, but at about 7:30 a.m. a buck appeared like a ghost about 50 yards away, but walked out of shooting distance before Brandon could get his gun ready. The deer then crossed the fence onto the neighboring property. I asked my son if he wanted me to try to grunt the deer back to us. He said yes, so I got the grunt call out and grunted. The deer didn't respond so I grunted again and the buck stopped for a minute, then started feeding in the field. I grunted again and this time the buck stopped feeding and looked back in our direction. One more soft grunt and the buck was on his way back to us. The deer crossed the fence back onto our property and came within 12 yards of our stand and stopped broadside. I had a great view of the deer in the video lens, but there was one small limb that Brandon felt was blocking a good shot because he had a lower view than me, because I was standing. Brandon readjusted until he got the deer in the crosshairs, took the gun off safety and then asked "can I shoot." I answered yes and the .243 roared. The deer must have jumped five feet in the air, and ran about 70 yards going down within sight of us. When I panned the camera back to him, his reaction was truly priceless.
We went down to the deer which was a 3-point buck, a true trophy for his first deer. I have waited for this moment since he began going with me when he was four years old.
Nothing can describe the bond a father and son get while hunting together, and the unbelievable feeling when they harvest their first deer and capture it on film. It will always be one of the best moments of my hunting career, and I will never forget it.
