Keith Pinson is absolutely crazy about hunting. He rifle hunts, as well as bowhunts, and his best buck to date is a 150" P&Y 14 pointer that he took with his Horton crossbow. Keith's hunting career started when he was 18 years old. Back then he went to the "deer woods" just to get away and spend some time with his dad Don, and other relatives. Have you ever heard the Hank Williams Jr. song "Family Tradition"? Well, Keith's relatives and friends have been going to the same ozark ridges and pine forest for over 50 years. The deer camp is nestled in the steep ozark ridges and hollows near Van Buren, Missouri, which is located in Carter County. Over 25 deer hunters gather at their camp every opening weekend of firearms season, and burning a pine knot, coupled with music and stories, keep the camp alive, and boy, if the trees could talk! Out of this deer camp is where Keith got hooked on deer hunting. He took his first deer opening day of 1995's firearms season, a nice 8- point buck. The buck was chasing a doe right toward him, and two well placed shots from his .30-30 Marlin sent this buck rolling down one of those steep Van Buren hollows. The buck rolled down into a creek, and after getting together with his dad, they went off the hill to get the buck out of the woods. The creek was a crimson red from the blood of the fallen buck. After a good drag out of the woods, Keith could hardly contain his excitement. He was HOOKED! Through the next several years, Keith took several deer, including does, spikes, and a couple small bucks. His next big buck was a mainframe 6-point, but with good mass and length. He took this buck during the 2003 firearms season with one shot from his trusty .30-30 Marlin rifle. After getting back home from the opening weekend hunt in Van Buren, he decided to hunt a few days at his parents small farm in Jefferson Co., Missouri. Early one morning, during the middle of the season, a heavy 6-point buck walked into his small, winter wheat food plot for a meal. The weather was miserable, with pouring down rain all morning. The weather probably forced the buck to take a short stroll from his bedding area to the food plot, for the weather had been non-stop rain for several days prior to that morning. Keith and his dad had planted this food plot on their small farm just for this reason. To give local deer a convenient food source. It was also convenient for Keith to be there waiting that morning, because the buck never left. A quick kill and the hunt was finished. Taking several deer with his PSE bow was always a thrill for Keith, but in the summer of 2000 that all changed. Keith was seriously injured in an on-the-job accident, and after several surgeries including months of rehabilitation, he was unable to pull a compound bow back. That didn't stop him however, and after the proper paperwork was finished, he had a permit to legally hunt with a crossbow. That crossbow would become very important to him during an evening hunt late in the bow season 2003. He was hunting the same food plot behind his parents home that he had taken the 6-pointer during rifle season. The food plot, planted in winter wheat, was a magnet for late season deer activity. Especially weary, tired old bucks that needed to replenish their health after they had run it down chasing does during the rut in November. The evening of December 22nd, three days before Christmas, that old buck entered the food plot. Keith had to stalk towards the buck several yards to get a opportunity for a shot, and with the buck by himself, it was one on one. Aiming the crossbow on the deers vitals, the bolt flew true and struck the deer right behind the shoulder. It was a perfect 25 yard double lung hit. The deer trotted off, and after covering 50 yards or so, fell over dead. Keith's father, Don, helped him get the big buck out of the woods. The huge 14-point buck field-dressed at 187 lbs., with an estimated live weight of around 235 lbs. That's a big, old mature deer. The 14 points taped out at 150" typical gross score, P&Y. Keith Pinson estimates he has taken more than 25 deer since that first 8-point buck down at the "deer woods". He also has some good video footage of deer, and keeps busy running two game cameras. He has several farms around Jefferson Co. to hunt, and also enjoys hunting coyotes, and has taken a few turkey with his crossbow. His favorite style of hunting is from the ground, putting emphasis on staying still, and staying alert. He rarely hunts from a treestand. Whatever the hunting style, his seems to be working! written by Matt McAnally hunter profile-Keith Pinson | Whitetail Feeding Habits All Year Long | The Ridge Stand by Matt McAnally | Off & Running--J.P.
