![]() The WOODSON K. WOODS wildlife area is located in East-Central Missouri, about twenty miles southeast of St. James off of Interstate 44. Owned by the MDC (Missouri Department of Conservation), Woodson K. Woods consists of approximately 5700 acres of land in Crawford and Phelps counties. The area is currently being managed as a walk-in and float-through area. There are seven parking lots around the edge of the property for public access. The Meramec river flows through most of the area, with one river access point. The walk-in only rule is why this area is tops for good, mature whitetail deer. It limits the amount of hunters willing to work hard in scouting, and hunting hard to reach places deep within the area. This is perfect for the bowhunter that isn't scared to work a little. The property is 80% timber, with the other 20% (or approximately 800 acres) in open fields. Over 200 acres of that tillable land is planted in crops such as corn, soybeans, milo, etc., with some acreage maintained in food plots. This is a bowhunters paradise. Beatiful rolling hills and rich Meramec riverbottoms have got a little bit of everything as far as food availability for deer, turkey, and other wildlife. The type of terrain, coupled with the low hunting pressure due to limited access, makes this ideal for going one on one with a good buck, or taking a doe with the MDC's liberal bag limits for 2004. Woodson K. Woods CA is not included in Missouri's pilot antler restriction rule. The conservation area also borders Maramec Spring Park, which is home to some fine rainbow trout fishing. To hunt the area, scout out a topographical map available from (MDC P.O. BOX 509, ROLLA, MO. 65401) and try to concentrate on available food sources. Locate agricultural crops and food plots in early season, then look for acorns and standing corn during and after the rut. Grunting and rattling techniques should show results also. There is a good chance you'll have your stand area all to yourself if you go deep into the area, away from roads. Hunting pressure can be heavy near parking lots and roads on certain days. Get back in there a ways, and you should see plenty of deer. Hunting is regulated under state rules. Pick-up a copy of the MDC's Fall Deer & Turkey booklet for more details. Portable treestands are permitted, but no screw-in steps. No vehicles of any kind, or horseback riding permitted other than on the designated parking areas. Camping and fires not allowed, however, check with Maramec State Park for camping info. Trapping is by special permit only. Give WOODSON K. WOODS CA a try. There is some quality hunting waiting to be had on alot of our Conservation Areas throughout Missouri, and we will try to feature a new area each month. The featured areas will almost always have been scouted or hunted by one of us, including the area in this article.
